WHY USE PLAIN CLOTHES SECURITY OFFICERS?

When you think of security guards or officers, the first image that comes to mind is uniformed men and women, with handheld portable radios clipped to their belts and wired earpieces plugged into their ears. This is the typical image of a uniformed security officer. However, sometimes the uniform and the visibility that comes with it can become a hindrance for security guards in optimally performing their duties. In such situations, undercover security officers can offer a better alternative.

It doesn’t mean that uniformed security guards are less effective than their undercover counterparts. Each type is effective for dealing with different security threats and risks. Hence, it’s important to identify the threats and risks first, and based on that, the decision to deploy undercover security officers or uniformed security guards is made.

Why Undercover Security?

The primary advantage of undercover security officers is that they perform their duties in plainclothes, which helps them remain unnoticed while offering effective crowd control. The security officers who are part of our undercover team have undergone special training and learned techniques that enable them to blend into their environment and effectively detect threats and risks. There is a basic difference between uniformed security officers and undercover security officers. They handle two different aspects of security. Uniformed officers primarily act as a deterrent, while undercover officers focus on detecting, investigating, and apprehending. Both types of security guards are important and often work together.

The annual National Retail Security Survey conducted by the National Retail Federation found that shoplifting is the top reason for inventory losses among retail establishments in the United States. Over 36% of inventory losses were caused by customer theft or shoplifting. It’s for security threats like this that undercover security officers are essential and most effective. A uniformed officer will not be able to monitor customer activity in a retail establishment as closely as an undercover officer. Video surveillance can augment detection of shoplifters, but might not be enough on its own to both detect and apprehend the shoplifters. An undercover officer can do both.

It’s not just retail stores, supermarkets, shopping centers, or warehouses where undercover officers are effective. They are equally suitable for providing stealthy security coverage in large corporations, at events such as concerts, sporting events, festivals, conferences, and in hospitality establishments such as casinos, hotels, clubs, and restaurants. They also operate effectively at government facilities, educational institutions, and more. They monitor meticulously, conduct patrols without being noticed, apprehend miscreants when necessary, create thorough reports, and yet appear as regular people to ensure no one is suspicious.

Most officers in our undercover security team have backgrounds in law enforcement and/or military. They have ample experience operating stealthily and springing into action when required. All of them have completed the mandatory state security guard licensing required and have the necessary permits to carry a firearm.
